⚡ Automations
Build trigger-based message flows
Automations let you send a sequence of WhatsApp messages automatically when a trigger happens — like a new lead, a contact tag added, or a specific time after opt-in. Set it up once, runs forever.
What automations do
A typical automation looks like this: Trigger (new contact added with tag "website-lead") → Wait 5 minutes → Send template "welcome_message" → Wait 1 day → Send template "follow_up_day1" → Wait 2 days → Send template "follow_up_day3".
Contacts automatically exit the automation if they reply (you can override this), or when they reach the last step.
Build an automation
01
Go to Automations → New automation
Click Automations in the sidebar, then New Automation. Give it a clear name like "Website lead nurture — 3 days".
02
Choose a trigger
Select what starts the automation. The most common triggers are listed below. Only one trigger per automation.
03
Add steps
Each step is either a Wait (time delay) or a Send message (template). Add them in sequence. You can have up to 20 steps per automation.
⚠
Only approved templates can be used in automation steps. Make sure your templates are approved before building the automation around them.
04
Set quiet hours (optional)
Quiet hours prevent messages from sending at odd times. E.g. set 10pm–8am as quiet hours — messages scheduled in that window send at 8am instead. Recommended for all automations.
05
Activate and enroll contacts
Toggle the automation to Active. Future contacts who match the trigger will auto-enroll. To enroll existing contacts, use the Enroll manually option.
Trigger types
| Trigger | When it fires |
|---|---|
| Contact created | Any new contact is added to your account |
| Tag added | A specific tag is added to a contact |
| Opt-in received | Contact submits your opt-in widget or link |
| Webhook | External system sends a signal (advanced) |
| Manual enroll | You manually add contacts to this automation |
Tips
Space out messages by at least 24 hours
Sending 3 messages in the same day feels spammy. A 1-day gap between follow-ups gets better response rates and keeps your quality score healthy.
Exit when they reply
Enable "Stop automation when contact replies". No one wants to get an automated message right after they've just had a conversation with you.
